The Web Is a Different Beast: Agent Mode, Playbook Mode, NCAA Mode — and Ref Mode Lands Tomorrow

If you read the mobile update post, you already know The Film Room got a serious overhaul on your phone — new home screen, AI Press Box, Combine Testing, Preseason War Room, the works. This post isn't that one.

This is about the web. About darkreelstudios.com/play, where we quietly shipped a completely different kind of update: modes that don't really work as thumb-tap toys. Modes that need a real screen, a real dashboard, real time to think. Career sims. Play design. Dynasty management. And starting tomorrow — officiating.

Here's every new web-native game mode on Dark Reel Studios, why they only make sense here, and what's coming next.

Agent Mode — The NFL Career Sim That Never Ends

Where to play: /play/agent-mode

Everybody's played a fantasy GM sim. Nobody's really played the agent. Agent Mode puts you on the other side of the table — building an agency from scratch, signing free agents, negotiating with front offices, chasing endorsements, and managing your reputation across an ongoing, persistent career.

What's in the build right now:

• Agency profile & rep meter. Every deal moves your standing with teams, players, and the press. Burn a GM once, and your next negotiation is harder.
• Multi-client roster. Sign real archetypes across positions and manage them all at once — QB1 franchise tags, edge rusher extensions, rookie rollouts.
• Live negotiations. An AI-driven front office pushes back in real time. Structure signing bonuses, void years, and incentives. Walk away and see what happens.
• Endorsements & The Smoke press engine. Recurring media hits — a Barstool-style radio drop, a Pat McAfee-style TV spot, a hit piece from a rival columnist. Your responses feed back into rep.
• Rival agents. Three AI competitors are working the same free agent pool you are. Miss a window and they'll swoop.
• Leaderboard. Global agency rankings. No sign-in required — everything persists to your device automatically.

Agent Mode is the mode we get the most "*how is this on a website and not an app?*" messages about. Short answer: because it needs the room to breathe. Long answer: because negotiations with 14 line items don't belong on a 6.1" screen.

Playbook Mode — Actual X's and O's, Actually Playable

Every sports app has trivia. Almost none of them let you call a play. Playbook Mode gives you a real football field, real formations, real route concepts — and animated route trees that draw themselves on the snap.

How it works:

1. Pick the situation — down, distance, field position, score, clock. 2. Pick the formation — Gun Trips Right, Ace Twins, Empty 3x2, Pistol Strong I, seven others. 3. Pick the play — three concepts per formation. Mesh, Levels, Y-Cross, Four Verts, Stick, Smash, Dagger, and more. 4. Snap it. Routes animate in with staggered timing. Scrub the timeline like a coach's tape. Replay it. Rewind it. Freeze at the break point. 5. Get the AI verdict — a Gemini-powered coach grade on whether your call matched the situation, plus the counter-look you should have considered.

It's a football IQ tool disguised as a game. And it's a browser experience by design — SVG animations, scrub bars, and side-by-side formation comparisons aren't a mobile-first pattern.

NCAA Mode — A Full College Football Dynasty in the Browser

We've talked about NCAA Mode before, but the web version has grown up. It's now a full dynasty simulator with five tabs of depth:

Season Mode

A 12-game schedule you play through week by week. You can Sim or Play each game — playing means engaging with a lightweight version of one of the Play Hub games (opponent-themed trivia, Stat Pad, Higher / Lower, Playbook) as a sim modifier. Perform well, your team performs well. Blow the challenge, expect chaos.

Every game generates a Film Room recap — AI-written coach's notes explaining what actually happened out there.

Recruiting

A searchable pool of recruits with position, star rating, and interest meters, plus an interactive US map (react-simple-maps) for regional targeting. Work the SEC, own the Midwest, poach California. Relationships build over the season.

Roster

Class-based management — Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors — with graduating classes and clear depth chart visibility.

Games (New)

A brand-new tab we added last week: 9 always-accessible college football games, independent of your season. College Trivia, Stat Pad, Higher / Lower, Playbook, Survival, Rivalry Week (Iron Bowl, The Game, Red River, and more), Transfer Portal, Stadium Nation, and Top 25 & Leaderboard. General versions of the games — not scoped to a specific opponent — so you can play them anytime.

Rankings

The team Top 25 plus a global Coach Leaderboard. Your score = 3 points per win + a Top 25 bonus + the sum of your best scores across all 9 hub games. Top 50 shown by default, and if you're not in it we pin your rank at the bottom so you can see how far you are.

Total Score is the number to chase. Everything you do in NCAA Mode feeds it.

Ref Mode — Dropping Tomorrow

Here's the tease. Tomorrow we ship Ref Mode — a game we've been quietly prototyping for weeks.

You watch the play. You throw the flag. Or you don't. Was it holding? Was it a catch? Was that a football move?

Ref Mode drops you into real, borderline officiating calls — booth review scenarios, bang-bang sideline decisions, controversial rulings from actual game footage and reconstructed scenarios. You make the call. You justify it against the rulebook. You get graded against how the actual crew handled it — and against how the community voted.

It's the mode nobody's built because officiating gets people upset. That's exactly why we're building it. If you think you'd have gotten that call right, we're about to find out.

Why These Are Web Modes, Not Mobile Modes

There's a real difference in what makes sense in each place. The mobile app is where you go for 90 seconds of trivia while you wait for your coffee. The web is where you go for a real session — a Sunday morning with a cup, or lunch at your desk, or a rainy Tuesday night when there's no game on.

The four modes above all need either:

• A wider canvas (a US recruiting map, a formation diagram, a negotiation dashboard),
• Persistent state across sessions without begging for a login, or
• Deeper mechanics than a swipe-based UI can carry.

FAQ

Do I need an account to play the web modes? No. Every mode above — including Agent Mode's roster, NCAA Mode's dynasty, and the leaderboards — persists to your device anonymously. No sign-in wall. Play immediately.

Are these the same as the mobile app modes? No. The mobile app is trivia-forward and daily-hit-focused. The web modes above are session-length experiences with deeper mechanics — the two lineups are intentionally different.

Where does Ref Mode fit? Ref Mode drops tomorrow on the web first. It joins Agent, Playbook, and NCAA as a longer-form, decision-heavy mode. Trivia it is not.

Is my Film Coins balance shared between web and app? Not yet — that's on the roadmap. Right now Film Coins live where you earned them.
